I had an adventure this morning. I was leaving work and it was like 1 degree with a wind chill of -21! I was using my husband's car b/c mine was leaking oil(we just change the oil 2 days ago). So I started the car and let it run. I shifted into reverse and backed out of the parking spot. When I shifted into drive the gears wouldn't shift. Now sometimes when his car is really cold it will do this. So I reversed into a parking spot behind me and let the car warm up. After about five minutes I shifted gears again. This time it shifted and I was able to drive. So I thought! As I started to accelerate the car wouldn't go very fast, only about 35 or so, which I thought that I could drive this speed limit home on the side roads. As I got about 20 blocks away from the hospital my car stopped accelerating! I was just far enough away to walk and their are no gas stations or stores nearby just houses! So I pulled over on the side of the road and waited in the warm car hoping someone would stop and let me phone someone. Oh did I mention that I forgot my cell phone in MY car! So after waiting about 30min. I decided to walk. As I was walking down the street, at 6:45 in the morning, I could feel the cold wind rip through my coat and face! I thought I had a pretty warm coat but today tested that theory! The moisture in my eyes felt like it turned to ice and my lungs burned! After walking about 4 blocks and thought I couldn't walk another step, I came upon a retirement home. My saving grace! I really thought my legs were going to give underneath me as I walked through the door. I immediately called my husband, but no answer. He sleeps so hard a train could rip threw the house and he wouldn't budge! So I called my Dad. He was out of town and My step-mom was walking out the door to babysit. She suggested I call a friend to help me out, which is a common word in her vocabulary when talking to me! I went to the bathroom and bawled! I felt so helpless! Not even my own family could help me. I sat thinking. All my phone number are programed in my cell phone and not in my brain. Luckily at work we keep a list of co-workers phone numbers. I called my friend Rachel, but no answer(she did call back and see if I still needed help. Thanks for for being their Rach!) I next called my friend Nicole who was sleeping in bed. She got out of bed and woke her 2 1/2 year old up to come picked me up. I am so grateful for the friends that I do have. Without them I would not have anyone to help me out in times of need!
It make me miss my mother so much! I know that she would always help me out. Even if she was busy, she would find a way to help. If I needed her to help out last minute with the kids she wouldn't say " It's not the best time for me but I'll do it!" or "Call a friend!","You might want to find a stranger to watch your kids over night why you work!" No, even if she was busy she'd say " This isn't the best time for me, but I will do anything a I can to help you out!" That's what mothers do! That's what family does. These days my only family is my friends!
